Veggies

I took some of these photos a while back on a compact camera randomly in the kitchen of a cabbage. Geekily, it reminded me of the design theory lecture I had on fractals.

... so I was quite surprised to see that a Dutch (it must be in the blood) design couple, Scholten and Baijings, also took an interest in the natural design of vegetables too creating these. On first inspection they look like photos of vegetables, possibly a few days old, but very convincing, after a closer look you can see they have been intricately hand-sewn. They're not the most exciting new must-have, must-know-about designs to be blogging about but i think they're actually quite lovely and delicate, and obviously drew my attention after I took my own photos a few weeks ago...

L♥ND♥N

I have recently come across this design by Rian Hughes, originally made back when Ken Livingstone was mayor of London, and before good old Borris. Rian had designed this as a logo for the City of London, incorporating the idea of Milton Glaser's I♥NY
What Rian Hughes has to say on the design of his logo and its future:
"I think we'll probably end up getting something worthy, but a bit dull and corporate,
rather than something iconic and fun that would get taken up by knock-off t-shirt sellers
and appear on everything from cheap mugs to badges to tea towels - the true gauge of the
success of a logo like this."

I actually really do hope this design gets noticed and picked up. Think Rian Hughes could become someone special... eyes on him.

The alphabet of logos.

This is an alphabet poster, created by Jason Dean comprised of part of or full logos to make an alphabet. My fave part is definitely the VW logo as one but including two letters to make it twenty five logos and able to fit in a square. Im sure this has been done before but i like the embossed foil stamped look, it looks more sleek and takes the colours away, making each of the letters equal.

Pimms

I love love love this advert.
It's humorous, entertaining, full of energy and fun. The music is the theme music to the New Avenger's, making it seem kind of A-Teamish with a sense of urgency but also fun.
What a love the most though, is how they've personified each of the ingredients as a person. Pimms as a well dressed typical of the perceived posh credentials that Pimms gives the impression of, dressed in the colours of Pimms. Jug, a typical sloppy builder, the type who would have the nickname 'Jug' and the advert goes on. I have to say that Mint is definitely my fave, a hard-nut army type parachuting in.
What makes it is that this group of people will be the life and soul of the bbq they're turning up to just as a drink of Pimms would; subtle messages that wouldnt necessarily click with the viewer straight away, apart from the idea that these people are fun, and so is Pimms. LOVE IT...

ICELAND

I'm sure we all know somebody effected by the volcano in iceland over the last couple of weeks, and have definitely seen it all over the news.
Its weird that planes have become so normal in everybody's day to day life. We just expect to look up and see planes crossing over, of the snails trail in the sky from a plane that was there. So the first time i saw a plane in the sky last week it seemed odd.

Out of the many negatives that have come from the whole chaos there are two positives. The second best being the name of the volcano... Eyjafjallajokull.
The first without a doubt is this visual representation of the flight paths around europe over the few days. Here it is...

Perfect!

The newest of my Blogs (as i try to start a constant flow again) is about something that i will need to invest heavily in, come my future.

I am definitely THAT clumsy child, and as a famous saying has come across from my home "every single bloody time, Anna!" i know my parents will ♥ these.

This product was designed by Norwegian designer, Kristine Bjaadal, and was intended to be a result of turning a negative into a positive. At first glance these sheets look like a normal set of household table cloths, but at further notice or after dinner time at the Prinselaar-Boulton household, you can see the extraordinary detail and ideas gone into these.
Basically, it absorbs anything spilt onto it to return a cute pattern for anyone sitting down. You can imagine the conversation at the table...
"oh pass me the wine please"
"ooooops oh no. I'll go get a cloth"
"NOPE, sit back down and watch"
"aaaaaaah"
"see no need to panic. now go get another bottle"

The Lovely Bones

I haven't blogged in a while. Well, for the festive season. Everybody knows how that can get in the way. I hope everybody enjoyed their christmas and had a glorious new year...
I thought my first blog of 2010 would be about something i have been thinking a lot about over christmas.
I am currently watching for the second time, the film The Lovely Bones, created by none other than Peter Jackson. The genius behind Lord of The Rings, and one of my other fave movies of the season, District 9.
The Lovely Bones, originally a very successful book by Alice Sebold, is about the murder of a 14 year old American girl in the 70's names Susie Salmon, and the aftermath of her death on her family and her murderer, while she's in heaven watching them.
For such a grim story, i never expected myself to want to see such a film, and my dad has been unable to watch it all the way through as of yet.
The movie is completely gripping and it's so tense that you feel utterly involved. The imagery, however, is truly captivating and the reason to my whole obsession with the film. The heaven that Susie goes into is her own and based on her previous life and her feelings. Peter Jackson did an amazing job with the CGI and visual effects to create stunning scenery. Her heaven can go from mountain tops to deserts, fields, oceans and beaches, each more ideal than the last. Objects from her life are involved in the surroundings too, for example bottles ships sailing through her ocean, and the gazebo she was supposed to meet a boy in being the centre of her heaven, and as the film progresses you can see the iconography and links to each important detail in the film.
It is really hard to describe the cinematography to you unless you see it, but once you do... i reassure you that through weeping eyes you will agree.
The film is close to being shortlisted for many Baftas and i am sure will be the same at the Oscars.
I have managed to get a few images from the film, but i would definitely recommend seeing this once it's released at the end of January.

Andy Hall

As much as i love editorial and fashion photography, my favourite has to be photojournalism. Having an avid passion for not only design and photography but also current affairs and politics, i always love a mixture of my interests. That being photojournalism.

I have been lucky enough to make one of my best friends at uni, whose dad is a photojournalist. Since being introduced to the photo wonders of Andy Hall i am constantly updating my knowledge of him and his photos, and much to his annoyance have managed to weed my way a few free images to stick up on my wall.
He has taken photos of so many legends including Bill Bailey, Don King, Bear Gryls and Martin Scorcese. Also of loads of current affairs and issues around the world, like the tsunami, Kosovo, Lebanon and Chernobyl. His photos always set the scene really dramatically and tells the story's of anyone in one. His work is inspiring and i would one day love to be as successful and take as many amazing pictures as him.

...if Andy sees this HEY KIDDO, this is meant to promote your work, not be a copyright infringement.

Patrick de Warren

I seem to be going a bit mad for the photographers tonight. But there are so many i need to get out there it's hard not to bombard!

My third photographer of the evening is Patrick de Warren. He lives in New York, obviously because this is me, but was raised in Paris, which you can totally tell in his pictures. He was lucky enough to be one of the few photographers selected by Giorgio Armani for the Armani Art Exchange project. I think this is due to his Images all seeming quite European compared to other photographers. His photographs are stunning, they definitely have a unique style, and are all very Vogue-esque.
